Storm Dave: Everything you need to know to stay safe this Easter weekend
Gusts of 50-60mph are expected within areas covered by the warnings, which may result in travel disruption
Storm Dave is set to bring extreme weather, including gusts of up to 90mph and blizzard conditions, specifically targeting Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of northern England and Wales. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for wind and snow, highlighting a potential danger to life from flying debris and structural damage.
The name Dave was a public suggestion chosen by the Met Office to honor a beloved husband who can snore louder than any storm. It is part of a 26-name alphabetical rotation shared with Ireland and the Netherlands. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and prepare for potential power cuts and mobile phone outages. The RAC predicts this will be the busiest Easter on the roads since 2022, with an estimated 21.7 million journeys planned. Major delays are expected on the M6, M25, M5, A303, and M4. Network Rail is undertaking over 270 upgrade projects.
Notably, the West Coast Main Line will be shut down for six days starting Good Friday, cutting off intercity services between London Euston and Milton Keynes. Holidaymakers traveling to the EU face potential two-hour waits at borders due to the rollout of the new Entry/Exit system(EES), which requires fingerprints and photographs for UK citizens. Despite these hurdles, airlines like EasyJet are preparing for record-breaking numbers, with up to 16,000 flights scheduled over the two-week school break.
