Train derailment in St. Catharines causes transit disruption and road blockage in Niagara region
The train derailment caused a visible spill from at least one overturned car
A train derailment in St. Catharines is under investigation after multiple railcars left the tracks, disrupting local transport services.
CN Railway confirmed that 13 railcars derailed near Glendale Avenue and Keele Street on Monday morning.
Emergency crews and railway officials were sent to the scene, according to the company.
There were no reported injuries or fires. CN Railway media relations advisor Michelle Hannan said crews were working alongside local responders to assess the situation.
The derailment caused a visible spill from at least one overturned car. Hannan said the substance was polyethylene, describing it as a "non-dangerous good" commonly used in household plastic manufacturing, adding there is no risk to public safety.
The cause of the incident remains unknown and is under investigation.
Police initially reported that the derailment blocked Glendale Avenue, though the road was later cleared.
The incident also affected regional transit. Metrolinx said GO train services were suspended between Confederation GO in Stoney Creek and Niagara Falls GO due to what it called a freight train issue.
