A Wisconsin man identified as a “person of interest” in connection with the fatal shooting at Brown University in the US, has been released from police custody as reported by Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.
According to CNN, Providence Police Chief Col Oscar Perez said the officials did not have enough evidence to charge the detained person.
While convening a joint news conference on Sunday, Col Perez shed light on the inadequate nature of evidence. As per investigators, the detained person did not resemble the person identified in CCTV footage as the suspect.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha added during the press briefing that the evidence “now points in a different direction.”
The police officials are now looking for additional video evidence that could bring them closer to the real perpetrator who committed the deadly shooting.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday, when a gunman opened fire at the Ivy League university in Providence, killing two people and injuring 9 others.
Earlier during the press briefing on Sunday, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley informed about the stable condition of seven people who were injured in the shooting. One of them is in critical condition and another was discharged.
Rhode Island governor Dan McKee expressed “My thoughts are still cantered on those individuals who lost their lives.”
According to the statement released by the university, some areas are still cordoned off as police are still continuing their investigation. Around 2000 students were shifted to safe places overnight.
