‘AI slop’: Macquarie Dictionary’s 2025 Word of Year exposes quality content crisis
AI slop, being an ubiquitous word, even used by Donald Trump is named 2025 Word of Year
Macquarie Dictionary has crowned “AI slop” 2025 World of Year on the grounds of its widespread use, not only by the public but also famous celebrities.
Chosen by the committee and voted by the public, AI slop has ubiquitously permeated every corner of the internet, characterized by “Shrimp-Jesus” and Mark Zuckerberg wood cravings.
As per dictionary, AI slop is defined as “low-quality content created by generative AI, often containing errors, and not requested by the user.”
The committee issued a statement, “We understand now in 2025 what we mean by slop – AI generated slop, which lacks meaningful content or use.”
“While in recent years we’ve learnt to become search engineers to find meaningful information, we now need to become prompt engineers in order to wade through the AI slop. Slop in this sense will be a robust addition to English for years to come,” the statement reads.
In today’s world, the selection of AI slop as the world of the year exposes modern anxieties characterized by the crisis of quality content and poor evaluation of online information.
The selection also reflects growing concerns regarding the deep penetration of AI in every domain. The pervasive use of AI not only copiously produces copyright material but also threatens artistic integrity, cognitive capacities, and creativity.
Among the following list of words, Macquarie Dictionary crowned AI slop.
- Ate (and left no crumbs)
- Attention economy
- Bathroom camping
- Bind box
- Clanker
- Medical misogyny
- Ozempic face
- Six-seven
- Roman Empire
In 2025, Collins Dictionary chose “vibe coding”; Dictionary. Com named the viral TikTok slang “6-7” as the world of the year. Earlier this week, Cambridge Dictionary selected “parasocial” as its word of the year 2025.
