Former LSU Star Kyren dies by suicide at 24, after police chase
Lacy was accused of a deadly car crash on the Louisiana Highway
Kyren Lacy, a former standout wide receiver for LSU on April 12, 2025, at the age of 24. His death, which authorities have described as an apparent suicide by firearm, occurred in Houston, Texas, following a police chase.
Lacy’s death came just two days before he was scheduled to appear at a grand jury hearing in Louisiana regarding a fatal car crash that happened in December 2024.
In January 2025, the Louisiana State Police (LSP) accused Lacy of causing a deadly car crash on Louisiana Highway 20 on December 17, 2024. The crash resulted in the death of 78-year-old Herman Hall of Thibodaux.
LSP stated that Lacy was driving a Dodge Charger and “recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed” in a no-passing zone.
He was arrested on January 12, 2025, and released on a $151,000 bail. Matt Ory, Lacy’s attorney, has strongly disputed the police’s claim that Lacy was responsible for the crash.
On April 12, 2025, Harris County authorities in Texas responded to a weapons disturbance call after a relative reported Lacy was involved in a verbal argument and had “discharged a firearm into the ground.”
When officers arrived, Lacy had fled in his vehicle, leading constables on a chase that lasted several miles and ended when his vehicle crashed. Authorities found Lacy dead inside the car from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Harris County Sheriff’s office stated that “preliminary information indicates that Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and prior to the vehicle crashing.”
Kenny Lacy, Kyren’s father, spoke about the tragedy, encouraging others to be mindful of mental health. He wrote on Facebook:
“Mental Health is real, and for the most part, it’s invisible, don’t ignore the signs, even if they may seem small.” He added, “Our lives have changed forever and this will never be ok, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here.”
