Perrier under fire, Is France’s famous water still pure?

France’s most famous bottled water brand, Perrier, is facing a major scandal. Once known for its clean and natural image, Perrier is now being questioned for using filtration methods that may break European rules.

The issues started when French newspapers revealed that some water companies in France, including Perrier, had been secretly filtering their water. They did this to remove bacteria and dirt because of water contamination caused by drought and climate change.

But European law says that “natural mineral water” must stay from the source to the bottle. It cannot be changed in any way. This rule is important because people pay more for bottled water, believing it comes straight from underground springs.

Now, experts and hydrologists are saying that climate change has made underground water less safe. Droughts, pollution, and farming chemicals are affecting even the deepest water layers. That’s why some companies felt they had no choice but to filter the water.

Investigations also showed that the French government may have tried to hide this issue. Reports claim that top officials and the company worked together to avoid a scandal. A Senate report even said that the government changed rules to help Perrier.

Perrier’s parent company, Nestle, had admitted using filters in the past; it also confirmed that one of its water sources was no longer approved as natural mineral water.

But the company says its water is still safe, clean and 100 percent pure. They now use a less powerful filtration method, with permission from the government.

Hydrologist Emma Haziza explained that deep underground water is now linked to surface water. That means pollution can reach it more easily. She said Perrier may be the first case, but other brands could face the same problem soon.

Last year 2024, Perrier had to destroy their three million bottles after contamination was found. The company now uses only two out of five wells for its mineral water. A final decision on Perrier’s mineral water status is expected later this year.
