Ferry runs aground in Greece, no casualties reported
A ferry ran aground, and the passengers were urgently disembarked in life jackets from sinking
A viral video clip shows a ferry ran underground carrying 105 passengers and nine crew members on Tuesday evening.
According to Greek authorities, the ferry was sweeping from Nea Stira to Agia Marina, water entered the vessel and ultimately got struck and immobilized.
Later, it was confirmed by ERT News that passengers were evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported.
However, prosecutors have launched an investigation against ferry captain who had been involved in breaching protocols and failed to inform authorities about the grounding immediately after the incident occurred.
Meanwhile, the coast guard has made multiple attempts to contact the captain through the medium of radio. He did not respond until 7pm, and more time had passed until the ferry ran aground.
At the moment, investigation has been underway and one day later the coast guard said that prosecutors have been informed that a ferry owner has not issued any sort of recovery plan, and hours have passed since the incident.
In addition, the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy is in the phase of further investigation about this incident.
