Princess Elisabeth of Belgium is proving that leadership starts with integrity.
The 23 year old royal, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Policy at Harvard University, has reportedly refused to use her royal status to gain preferential treatment as international students face uncertainty in the U.S.
According to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws, the future queen has told palace officials she wishes to "show solidarity with the other foreign students", as thousands including herself could be impacted by former President Trump’s proposed ban on certain international enrollments.
The eldest daughter of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, recently completed her first year at the prestigious Ivy League university and has made it clear she won’t seek any special exemptions, despite her unique position as heir to the Belgian throne.
She continues to win praise for her principled stand, as sources confirm both King Philippe and Queen Mathilde fully support their daughter’s refusal to accept preferential treatment amid ongoing uncertainty over her studies at Harvard University.
The Royal Palace of Brussels has acknowledged the situation, with palace communications head Xavier Baert stating, "We are looking into the situation, to see what kind of impact this decision might have on the Princess, or not. It's too early to say right now."
Elisabeth is keenly aware that requesting special allowances could not only undermine her credibility, but also jeopardise Belgium’s diplomatic standing with the U.S.
