WhatsApp to get livelier with new motion photo sharing option
New feature in Meta's instant-messaging app incorporates format popular among users of various mobile devices
WhatsApp is set to unveil an innovative feature that will enable users to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels in an upcoming update.
The popular Meta-owned instant-messaging app announced the new feature in its latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.8.12 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, WABetaInfo reported.
Motion photos are a unique media format that captures the brief moments of movement before and after a still image, combining video and audio for a more immersive experience.
This format has gained popularity among users of various mobile devices, as it blurs the line between traditional photos and videos, infusing snapshots with enchanting animations.
The motion photos are typically saved in specialised formats that merge static images with short clips, allowing users to easily relive cherished memories with a single tap.
When users attempt to open the gallery sheet, they can expect to see a new button specifically for motion photos.
This button will give users the option to choose between sending the static image or the motion photo version, if available, offering greater flexibility depending on the context.
While the motion photo-sharing feature is still in development, it is expected to be compatible with both individual and group chats, as well as channels.
Additionally, recipients will automatically view the motion photo in its animated form, even if the feature is not supported on their device. Meanwhile, for iOS users, these motion photos will likely appear as Live Photos.
