Australia’s police are probing an angle into the Bondi Junction mall attack — why were women targeted?

The lone assailant stabbed six people to death — five women and one man — in the busy Sydney shopping mall last week Saturday and injured several others. However, his victims were only women as he completely avoided men, NBC News reported.

40-year-old Joel Cauchi’s father has said that his son’s frustration came from him not having a girlfriend.

Fortunately before he could kill more, police shot him in the Westfield Bondi Junction mall, which is near the world-famous Bondi Beach. Ruling out terrorism, the law enforcers said that the attacker had a history of mental illness.

Detectives are all set to question Cauchi’s family to understand his motive, New South Wales state Police Commissioner Karen Webb said, as CCTV footage showed that he focused only on women.

“The videos speak for themselves, don’t they? And that’s certainly a line of inquiry for us,” Webb said.

“It’s obvious to me, it’s obvious to detectives that that seems to be an area of interest: that the offender had focused on women and avoided the men,” Webb added.

Andrew Cauchi, the attacker’s father, explained that, “[Cauchi] wanted a girlfriend and he’s got no social skills and he was frustrated out of his brain”, and that’s why he attacked women.
