After a video purportedly showing a worker peeing into a container of beer ingredients went viral, top Chinese beer manufacturer Tsingtao Brewery said on Monday that it had informed the police and taken precautions to prevent contamination.

Since it was posted on China's microblogging site Weibo last Thursday, the video of a warehouse worker peeing on the contents of a container while wearing a blue uniform and a yellow hat has garnered tens of thousands of views and raised questions about food safety among netizens.

The video's veracity is yet to be confirmed by the independent observers.

"Now that he is being filmed and posted online, has he ever had this behaviour of urinating into raw ingredients before?" one user commented.

"The problem is how to assure the public that the existing beer raw materials are not contaminated," wrote another.

Tsingtao shares, which are traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, fell as much as 7.5% in early Monday trade before stabilising to settle down 0.37%.

Tsingtao stated that it "attaches great importance" to the occurrence in a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange and that the security authorities were conducting an investigation.

"The batch of malt in question is completely sealed," Tsingtao said, adding the company's production and operation continued as normal.
