Rawalpindi: Director General of Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) Major General Muhammad Afzal visited Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2) on Thursday and inaugurated the renovated Bhera rest area, says a press release.
While talking on the occasion, he said that all rest areas will be brought at par with international standards so that passengers feel pride in travelling on the motorway. The Bhera Service Area was the first one to be completed under which an overall facelift and better facilities have been provided. He said that overlaying shall be completed within the time schedule.
The overlay and modernisation project for Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2) goes much beyond the repair and re-carpeting of the 16 years old road. Under the scope of work, a massive plantation is also carried out under which 600,000 saplings are being planted in greenbelts along the motorway.
The campaign started with plantation of a sapling by the director general. The existing plantation is quite haphazard being planted in haste with the M-2 construction. Most trees are of eucalyptus which consume excessive water – already a scarce commodity in the 'barani' area. Theme parks and picnic areas are also being developed.
