LAHORE
Punjab PPP president Mian Manzoor Watto has demanded abolishing the entrance test system in Punjab for the students seeking admission to medical colleges in a statement issued on Sunday.
He said the entrance test was anti-merit and discriminatory in its nature because students who got 950 marks out of 1000 in the FSC examinations might not get admission.
He recalled that in 1986-87 legislation was passed to introduce merit in medical colleges and the engineering universities strictly based on merit and merit alone determined by the results of FSC examination.
The parents and students were totally satisfied with the observance of merit for seeking admission in professional colleges and there was no complaint from students who were denied the admission if they secured required merit in the exams of FSC.
The same legislation also done away the quota system of governor, chief minister, principals of the colleges and the system was working perfectly as was manifested by the no complaint from any side. It also addressed the illicit practice of recommendations from the top, he added.
He observed that the entrance system was heavily weighted against the students who came from the Urdu medium background and favoured the English medium students. It is discriminatory because it shrinks the prospects of the commoner students in getting admission although they got more numbers in the FSC results as compared to others who got admission.
