This refers to the article ‘Triggering transformation’ (May24) by Dr Khalid Malik and Dr Akmal Hussain. The article offers five important policy initiatives to improve the state of human development in Pakistan. It also underlines the importance of creating awareness among people to prevent diseases by taking precautions which is always better than resorting to expensive cure and treatments in hospitals. It was also pointed out that merely increasing budgetary allocations for social sectors is not the solution.
According to the writers, comprehensive measures are needed to create an institutional and structural basis to transform Pakistan into an equitable society. It is unfortunate that in Pakistan such bright ideas are read and appreciated, but they are shelved without any action. It is time the political parties that are competing in the elections pondered over the suggested courses of action and took steps that will help resolve all social-sector-related problems.
