Terrorist attacks

By our correspondents
February 22, 2017

If the pattern of terrorist attacks is closely observed, one will conclude that these incidents happen whenever any national or international mega event is supposed to take place in Pakistan. Last week, a series of terrorist attacks including the Lahore blast and the Sehwan blast shook the country. It seemed that the attack was carried out to deter foreign players from coming to the country to play the final match of the PSL.

Although law-enforcement agencies are doing their best to restore peace in the country, they are still unable to stop terror attacks from happening. Violence in the country is flared up in no time. Such attacks are always carried out to hinder the country’s growth. Development projects and international events are compromised because of such incidents.

The recent surge in terrorist attacks across the country appears to label Pakistan a dangerous country. This has also sent signals to China to review its decision of working with the country under the CPEC project. In view of the prevailing unusual situation, certain drastic measures are recommended at the national level. The interior ministry must get laws amended that govern the performance of the police. ‘Sleeper cells’ are becoming increasingly active in the country. In the guise of banned organisations, they are nurturing themselves in some madressahs across the country. The role of police comes in here. The police must be provided with latest gadgets, transport and weapons and removed from protocol duties.

The SHO who fails to check the grooming and supply of suicide bombers from his area of responsibility should be fired for negligence. Same goes for intelligence agencies working under the interior ministry. Their job is not ‘to inform’ but stop the incidents before they take place. All madressahs in the country must be registered. They should be asked to teach science and technology besides religious education. Through an act of parliament, religious parties should be barred from taking part in politics. While the military should resume surgical strikes on terrorists’ logistic bases and hideouts in Afghanistan, a strong message should be sent to India to refrain from producing terrorists in Afghanistan.
