Regional languages
This refers to the article, ‘The desertion of Punjabi’ (Oct 19) by Shahid Siddiqui. The writer correctly positioned the state of regional languages in Pakistan. In fact, it is not only Punjabi which faces marginalisation, but Sindhi, Balochi, Pashto or other regional languages also suffer the same problem. Article 251 of the constitution makes it obligatory for provincial governments for the promotion of regional languages. However, the state’s neglect indicates that it is not ready to give due share to the country’s indigenous languages.
Pakistan is a federal country and diversity is the sole feature of it. The government must realise this and formulate a policy of linguistic diversity which ensures the national integration.
