Diversion troubles
The alarming Taunsa-Panjnad (TP) link canal and the Chashma-Jhelum (CJ) link canal have reportedly been opened by the Punjab government, despite the fact that Sindh is facing a 37 per cent water shortage at its barrages. This move seems to be against the spirit of interprovincial harmony and highlights a serious failure on the part of the IRSA (Indus River System Authority). As far as I know, the TP and CJ link canals are flood canals, designed to operate only during flood situations.
Their continuous operation during dry periods raises serious concerns. As does the proposed ‘six canals project’. There appear to be constant efforts to divert the waters of the Indus River, which has a disproportionate impact on Sindh. I urge the federal and ensure that water is distributed fairly.
