LAHORE: In a decisive move to eliminate the no-go areas and dismantle organised crimes across Punjab, the provincial government has formally tasked the newly established Crime Control Department (CCD) with spearheading this initiative.

Acting on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the CCD has been positioned as a specialised unit aimed at transforming Punjab into a crime-free province.

The first official and high-level meeting of the CCD was held at the Central Police Office in Lahore, presided over by Inspector General of Police, Dr Usman Anwar. The session was attended by regional and district officers of the CCD from across the province.

During the meeting, the participants engaged in detailed deliberations on the department’s operational framework, including the newly proposed ordinance, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training schedules, case transfers, equipment needs, and long-term crime-fighting strategy. The integration of the CCD into Punjab’s broader policing framework was also discussed in depth.

According to sources, District Police Officers (DPOs) have been directed to immediately relieve Station House Officers (SHOs) recently transferred to the CCD from various police stations. While some officers reportedly sought political backing to retain their current positions, CCD leadership stood firm on its decisions, declining all recommendations and insisting on merit-based appointments.

A key component of the CCD’s operations will involve modern equipment and tactical capabilities. Plans are underway to procure advanced weaponry, including sniper rifles, drones, 5G locators, and bulletproof vehicles. The department will also initiate training of a commando force modeled after the US Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Jang, Additional IG CCD Sohail Zafar Chattha emphasized that the department has officially commenced operations. “We are acting on the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to make Punjab a safe and crime-free province,” he stated. “All no-go areas will be dismantled, and CCD will play a pivotal role in ensuring law and order.” Chattha further revealed that CCD has recruited some of the province’s most experienced and respected crime fighters. “Case transfers of serious criminal investigations to CCD will begin this week. We will work closely with district police officers to achieve their crime-fighting goals,” he said.

Highlighting the provincial government’s commitment, Chattha noted that the chief minister has allocated Rs12 billion to the CCD. “The trust placed in this force will be honored with complete dedication and transparency. We are determined to leave no stone unturned in fulfilling our mission.”

The CCD is now operational and set to become a cornerstone of Punjab’s revamped policing strategy, marking a significant step in the government’s broader vision of peace, safety, and reform across the province.
