Govt notifies biosphere reserves in KP
ABBOTTABAD: In a significant conservation effort, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has translated policy into action as the Secretary of the Climate Change, Forestry, Environment, and Wildlife Department issued the official Gazette Notification declaring two internationally ratified Biosphere Reserves - Gallies (Abbottabad) and Bashkar-Garamchashma (Chitral).
The notification issued on 14th April 2025 ( copy available with this correspondent ) following the formal approval of the provincial cabinet and marks a major step in aligning provincial conservation efforts with globally accepted standards. These sites were earlier recognized by UNESCO and included in its World Network of Biosphere Reserves, granting Pakistan notable recognition as a pro-conservation nation on the international stage.
A wide spectrum of people, including conservationists, environmental experts, civil society, and local communities, have welcomed the decision. They termed it a positive and timely initiative by the provincial government for the long-term protection of biodiversity, natural ecosystems, and sustainable livelihoods in the region.
The designation of these Biosphere Reserves not only strengthens Pakistan’s standing in global environmental forums but also paves the way for scientific research, responsible eco-tourism, and inclusive community-based conservation.
This development reflects the continued commitment of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to uphold environmental values and ensure the preservation of natural heritage for future generations.
The notification also paves the way for scientific research, responsible eco-tourism, and community-based conservation, reflecting the KP government’s commitment to environmental preservation for future generations.
