A Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) worker was shot dead in an alleged target killing incident in Orangi Town on Wednesday, police said.

The firing took place near the Jama Masjid Muslimeen in the Orangi Town area, where armed motorcyclists killed 42-year-old Wasim Siddiqui, who was a political activist with the JI.

Following the incident, police and rescue services reached the crime scene and shifted the casualty to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The victim was the father of four children. Police said that the deceased was shot once in his head.

A large number of JI leaders and workers converged at the hospital, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the killing.

According to police, the initial investigation found that Siddiqui was called out from his house before the firing occurred. He worked as a travel agent. Police suspected that the killing was an outcome of personal enmity. An empty shell of .30 bore bullet was recovered from the crime scene.

Karachi JI emir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman condemned the killing, saying that the authorities including the chief minister and law enforcement agencies should take notice of the incident. He demanded a transparent investigation and immediate arrest of the killers. Police registered a case and further investigations were underway.
