Makeup is a part of a woman’s routine. This week, You! takes a look at why it is necessary to add vegan products to your makeup essentials...

We all know that women just love makeup! They do, as they want to look good and feel good. Makeup and cosmetics can also boost their confidence by making their skin look radiant and flawless. However, for the love of these oh-so-ahmazing beauty products and cosmetics, women often forget about how at times it can harm their skin along with the environment. Most of them don’t think twice about where their cosmetics or beauty products come from before purchasing them.

Nowadays, with more awareness of how animals are used for testing by cosmetic companies, it is important to note that testing products on living beings have no known benefits. The animal rights movement values the idea that beauty cosmetics should not involve animal testing. While many widely popular brands are still not cruelty-free or we can call ‘vegan’, there are just a few reasons why you should step away from such brands and value this useful movement...

Vegan products are designed to prioritise the safety of animals. If your skin is sensitive to chemical substances, these products will be gentler on your skin. Therefore, testing harsher products on animals is unnecessary for quality skin care. Vegan products are also healthy for your skin so put your money where it counts and opt for this absolutely perfect makeup option. There are big names in the beauty industry that have been producing high-end ethical products like The Body Shop, Kat Von D Beauty, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Hourglass, Urban Decay (Owned By L’Oreal), Too Faced (Owned By Estee Lauder) and NARS, to name a few.

For years, Muslim women have struggled with the dilemma of using certain beauty products because of questionable substances found in them. Fortunately, the beauty industry is now evolving and getting more inclusive of the different cultures and values. There are now brands that have Halal certification which proves that they don’t have non-permissible substances and are vegan.

The best part is that there are local brands accessible for all lovely ladies out there! Some of these brands are also based in Pakistan which include Luscious, MM Makeup by Masarrat Misbah and Odho Cosmetics by Atiqa Odho, to name a few.

Makeup for the pure: Redah Misbah, Director of Depilex Group (owned by Masarrat Misbah) says, “We have been working on our cruelty-free makeup line for the last three years before its launch. We researched and asked people if the formulas were free of animal testing or any harmful by-products but weren’t as successful; until we came to know about Halal certification. The products are cruelty-free, harmful chemical free, plant-based, there’s no alcohol, no parabens, no carmine, or anything that could possibly be harmful.”

Similarly, Masarrat Misbah adds, “I’ve been in the field of beauty since the last 38 years now, and I’ve realised that the colour cosmetic range of any brand, there is so much that can be improved done according to our country, people, colour and climate. And while I was working on it I realised that there are number of non-permissible and pure ingredients that are in every colour cosmetic. And for it to be made pure, it was the choice of ingredient and on top of that it should be at par with any international brand. MM Makeup is produced and certified in Turkey by an authentic organisation as Halal. We started slowly and gradually, and now three years down the lane, we are adding more colours along with improving our formulas.”

Just because if the product is vegan, it doesn’t mean the brand doesn’t have variety. There is a huge range of products for everyone. The cult favourite product from this range is the silk foundation that doesn’t even need concealers, except for a little moisturiser if you have dry skin. For our kind of climate, which is hot most of the year round, this foundation is probably the perfect choice.

As for the lip colours, they are matte and pigmented especially their newly launched liquid lipsticks. So, whatever colour you choose to apply will surely stay there.

Light on your skin: Achieving Halal certification is a time-consuming and expensive process, and each country has different parameters for what can be deemed halal. This is the reason why Luscious Cosmetics, founded in 2007 by beauty aficionado and entrepreneur, Mehrbano Sethi, rather than claiming for Halal certification, chose to become vegan-certified by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a universally recognised group.

If you’re looking for great, professional-grade makeup that is 100% cruelty-free and vegan, there are now a number of wonderful brands that you can choose from. So, fulfil your beauty needs guilt-free.

Luscious has some of the most moisturising and pigmented lipsticks which sell out like hot cakes. A favourite among most beauty enthusiasts is the Angel Eyes eye primer and the contour kit that boasts as being universal. The powder in the contour kit has a velvet-y texture and they blend like a dream.
