Feedback

Hi Ed,

I just finished reading ‘Diaries from a Small Island’ by Muhammad Asif Nawaz, and I cannot praise it enough. Asif should become a professional writer. I have read two of his travelogues – on Sri Lanka and Vietnam - I may have missed others - and I think he can make people like me who have never been outside the country actually visualize what he writes about places and people. Thanks for a great write-up, Asif and Us!

Hello Editor,

I am an old reader and decided to write to praise an article by an old writer who seldom writes for Us. Lubna Jerar Naqvi’s ‘The case of illegible writing’ (April 22) was a funny read. The writer makes a great point, though; we depend too much on keypad and auto-correct. At the same time, is it really bad? When we have a facility, what’s the point in not using it? After all, only those who actually know how to write can write well even on Word. I find it difficult to use paper and pen, but I only have to do it write clothes that go for laundry every week. Anyway, good to read something from one of my favourite writers of Us.

Hi Ed,

I have been following – and enjoying – Iqra Asad’s ‘The Eid Engagement and Other Weddings, and am loving the recent episodes. The pace has become faster and all the characters are now well-defined. My favourite character is Ray, because he is somewhat similar to my pesky older brother. What I mean is that the story is fun to read because you can relate to real life characters. Keep up the good work, Iqra! I hope you become a great bestselling writer.

Ed,

I remember when there used to be such great crime stories in Us! Now, I think no one is into writing stories anymore, which is a real loss. I don’t mean to say that the stories that do get published are not up to the mark. But, I feel they are girlish, all about weddings and dresses.

I miss ‘Ground Reality’, though. It was my favourite section. I tried a couple of drinks’ recipes publisged in in Us, as they were the easiest, and have become stuck making sherbet for iftar ever since, as my mom liked them that much! Or may be it was her way of getting out of sherbet duty! So, don’t do recipes in the future.

Reflection

Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):

The Prophet (S.A.W) said, “When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba.”
