Dear Ed,

‘The lost art of reading’ by Zeeshan Ahsan (May 7) was a great read. Reading is not lost in the west where book reading culture is still very much alive. People read books when travelling by planes, buses and trains, gift books to children instead of toys and encourage them to read. In our country, tuition culture has severely curtailed the time for reading! If students go for tuition after school and return in the evening, how can they read. Studies have been made such a burden for students that they don’t have time for reading and physical activities. I think that this problem needs to be addressed by concerned authorities.

Hi Ed,

I have been noticing that art has disappeared from the back cover almost entirely. Where have all the artists gone? I remember enjoying the art work of Hamid Gulistan and so many others, but now ever Friday when I look at the back page I feel disappointed. Please do something to motivate the artists! I am sure there is no dearth of talent and if you encourage the artists you will be inundated with art work of great quality.

Hey Ed,

‘The Eid engagement and other weddings’ by our own, Iqra Asad, is really going well. I have noticed that even at her lightest, Iqra tries to highlight some issue. Here we have a guy and girl, clueless about their future partner, that too in this day and age, which seems unbelievable but is a sad reality; parents decide the fates of their children without bothering to consult them after giving them good education and the ability to think!

I am not saying that they shouldn’t; I mean to say that girls need to be given the power to decide for themselves. Why am I even thinking about this when even boys are not consulted in this process by their moms!

My heart goes to the protagonists as they both are not given the opportunity to meet or talk before they are made a part of ‘third party engagement’. Things need to change!

Reflection

Narrated by Abu Bakr (R.A.)

Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W) said thrice, “Shall I not inform you of the biggest of the great sins?” We said, “Yes, O Allah’s Apostle.” He said, “To join partners in worship with Allah: to be undutiful to one’s parents.” The Prophet sat up after he had been reclining and added, “And I warn you against giving a forged statement and a false witness; I warn you against giving a forged statement and a false witness.” The Prophet kept on saying that warning till we thought that he would not stop.
