Feedback

Hello Ed,

I am missing entertainment pieces in the magazine. Please publish music and movie reviews in Us more often. And I have noticed that stories are also not published as often as they used to be. There should be more stories like Hackschool Projects!

Saving our culture

Dear Ed,

This is my first letter to Us, and I decided to write because Us is a magazine for youth and my problem relates to the youth only. I am worried about the way our culture and values are eroding under the western influence. We follow their movies, their TV shows and their stars are just as popular in Pakistan as they are in their own country. We feel proud of our fluency in English and speak our own mother tongues in foreign accents. Not only that, instead of wearing our eastern type of clothes, young people have taken to wear clothes that are not decent at all. Ed, I am in a medical college and am in no way against jeans or dresses as long as they are decent. I only get irked because tank tops, off shoulder and short tops have become a norm. In branded stores, it’s difficult to find shirts with duppattas because they are ‘out of fashion’. What are we doing and where are we heading? We have to make efforts to save our culture. I hope you will publish my letter.

Reflection

Narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri (R.A)

The Prophet (S.A.W) said, “Amongst the men of Bani Israel there was a man who had murdered ninety-nine persons. Then he set out asking (whether his repentance could be accepted or not). He came upon a monk and asked him if his repentance could be accepted. The monk replied in the negative and so the man killed him. He kept on asking till a man advised to go to such and such village. (So he left for it) but death overtook him on the way. While dying, he turned his chest towards that village (where he had hoped his repentance would be accepted), and so the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment quarrelled amongst themselves regarding him. Allah ordered the village (towards which he was going) to come closer to him, and ordered the village (whence he had come), to go far away, and then He ordered the angels to measure the distances between his body and the two villages. So he was found to be one span closer to the village (he was going to). So he was forgiven.”
