Ever since drama serial Udaari, which talked about the issue of child abuse, got an overwhelming response from viewers and critics, plays with social themes have become the new trend. Another project that aims to highlight social issues and serve as a source of information to the audience, apart from entertaining them, is upcoming play Sammi. Sammi stars Mawra Hocane in the titular role.

Making her comeback to the small screen with Sammi, Mawra Hocane talks about her role in the play and what she is up to now that the shoot has wrapped up.

Karachi :Ever since drama serial Udaari, which talked about the issue of child abuse, got an overwhelming response from viewers and critics, plays with social themes have become the new trend. Another project that aims to highlight social issues and serve as a source of information to the audience, apart from entertaining them, is upcoming play Sammi. Sammi stars Mawra Hocane in the titular role.

A meet and greet session with the cast and crew of Sammi was held on Wednesday in Karachi where the team talked about the idea behind the play. Directed by Saifee Hasan and written by ace writer Noor ul Huda Shah of Marvi, Ajayeb Ghar and Jungle fame, Sammi talks about Vani (a tradition of forced marriages in some rural areas), maternal and child healthcare and female inheritance laws.

With an all-star cast including Hocane, Adnan Siddiqui, Bilal Khan, Rehan Sheikh, Madiha Rizvi, Irfan Khoosat, the play is set to air sometime later this month.

While most of the cast members couldn’t attend the press conference, Hocane (who makes her comeback with Sammi after almost a year) was present at the event to talk about the play and respond to media personnel. We caught with her on the sidelines of the event to find out more about the play and her upcoming projects.

“I feel proud to be a part of Sammi; I feel I’ve a platform where I can actually solve problems,” Hocane expressed her excitement on being attached to a socially relevant play. “I may not be able to do that as an individual but being able to spread awareness with Sammi about something that people don’t know of, I feel a sense of gratitude and take pride in the fact that I’m in a position to help others.”

Hocane remains in the limelight as she keeps updating her fans about her whereabouts – she has the highest number of followers on Instagram among female artists. However, while she remains quite active on social media, it’s been a while she hasn’t done any project. Sammi marks her comeback to the small screen after a break of almost a year, before which she made her Bollywood debut with Sanam Teri Kasam.

When asked if there were any other projects she was working on in the meantime, she responded, “I didn’t have a lot of time; I was unwinding from the film [Sanam Teri Kasam]. The film was emotionally very strenuous and tiring as you saw on the screen. I think it was for the first time that a project took a toll on me so I had to really shake it off and then come into a new project.”

Talking about other projects that crossed her path before she took up Sammi, she revealed, “In between I was starting another project which was also of course a great project but I couldn’t do it because I didn’t think I was ready.”

When we asked if it was film project, she didn’t want to respond to it and brushed it aside by saying, “Now it’s gone.”

Hocane has not appeared in any Pakistani film yet. She is one actress who stepped into Bollywood before making her film debut in Pakistan. However there have been some rumours surrounding the actress that suggest she is associated with quite a few film projects – a project with Ali Zafar and a Saqib Malik film alongside Umair Jaswal.

On doing a film with Ali Zafar, the actress said, “There’s not much I can say about it.” However, she didn’t refute the rumour either and went on to say, “All the projects that I’m doing after Sammi I am not allowed to talk about.”

Refraining from disclosing anything about her upcoming film projects, including a film opposite Jaswal, Hocane stated, “There’s lot happening right now but I am not allowed to talk about the projects until they go on floor, even though I’m dying to share everything.”

However the actress informed that she plans to take a break for three months and go for her LLB finals, directing the conversation from films to studies as part of her future plans.
