Two years ago a fashion show was organized by PIA and almost a dozen designers participated, offering their vision of how the crew on the national carrier should look. A very prestigious panel of judges was appointed and they made their selection, which we got to see in the final ensemble modeled by some of PIA’s good looking hostesses. What we see is a rich, plum outfit, designed by Nomi Ansari and paired with a turquoise headscarf designed by Sania Maskatiya. Nomi Ansari’s original design – which included a jacket – has been modified to a shirt that may be more flattering on larger body types. The crew will wear a cape (in winter) designed by Yasmeen Sheikh and the cape, accessories and luggage will all be black.
“Pakistan represents colour,” Bunto Kazmi, who has been spearheading the project spoke to Instep. She responded to the fact that the uniform does not at all play with the national colours, green and white. “The committee chose plum and turquoise, which looks very good. And the uniform hasn’t always been green and white. We’ve had mustard and moss green and shocking pink as well.”
Needles to say, one hopes that the revamped PIA uniform will be the first in a series of much needed changes we need to see!
