Incidents related to gun violence have spiked in the US in the recent past, the latest one being a 17-year-old shooter killing 10 people, including a teacher and a foreign exchange student from Pakistan Sabika Sheikh, at Santa Fe High School in Texas.
However unfortunately, the US government, including President Donald Trump, has failed to recognise people’s easy access to guns as a major problem.
Public officials are blaming everything but guns for the deadly mass shootings taking place in the country. Here are some of those:
Medicine
According to the incoming president of the National Rifle Association – an organization who the shooter’s father was an active member of – said that usage of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) drug had caused the incident.
“Many of these young boys have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten…” he added.
On the other hand, it is unclear if the shooter actually had a history of Ritalin intake.
Doors
Republican lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, a staunch supporter of gun rights in Texas, blamed the number of doors in schools to be the root-cause of the entire problem.
“Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe he would have been stopped,” Dan said.
Dan’s comment invited a sea of criticism from a huge number of people.
Video games
Patrick also stated that video games have contributed in encouraging violence among children.
“Psychologists and psychiatrists will tell you that students are desensitized to violence, may have lost empathy for their victims by watching hours and hours of video, violent games," he said.
As per the statistics however, China, US and Japan are all top consumers of video games. But gun violence is considerably high in the US only.
