These plants don’t need water to grow

NOLI, Italy: Nemo’s garden is a one-of-its-kind project where the plants don’t require any water at all. This is because the plants are grown under the water.

The plants are grown in concentrated pods enabling them to utilize the ocean’s temperature for survival.

A project of Ocean Reef group, Nemo’s Garden started as an experiment when Sergio Gamberini, felt like the underwater temperature could be utilized to grow food in a responsible way.

The garden has 5 biospheres with a ‘Tree of Life’ in the center. The tree connects cables to each sphere and is itself connected to a control tower on the shore. The tower monitors temperature and humidity and also provides power. Each pod has a fan to keep the air circulating, which allows condensation and keeps the plants watered.

The pod is very much like an underwater greenhouse. The creators are now producing smaller biospheres that can be placed in aquariums at home.

The garden was developed in 2013 and is just off the coast of Noli, Italy. Five years down the road, the project has taken an organized shape with better materials, sensors, cabling, hydroponic culture, and technology. The biospheres have a system of remotely activated mechanisms like fans, internal, external cameras, wi-fi and intercom.
