Marco Rubio announces online passport applications: What Americans need to know

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has officially announced plans to expand online passport services for first-time applications starting next year-a major move to make the application process more convenient for eligible Americans.

The primary motive behind this move is to develop a system on America.gov that would allow applicants to complete the passport process digitally. This would help eliminate much of the paperwork and in-person steps involved in applying for a first passport.

The new system is expected to include digital application processing with real-time updates on an application’s progress and its projected arrival data.

According to Rubio, the administration's primary target is to have most Americans able to apply for a passport or passport card through America.gov by the end of 2027. Most importantly, first-time adult passport applicants must present an application in person at a certified processing location and submit required documents, alongside all applicable fees.

The online system is being created as part of a larger initiative to transition government services away from paper-based procedures and make them easier to access digitally. It is pertinent to mention here that until the new system is fully in place, first-time applications still need to follow the existing process for their applications.
