Trump says Superintelligence will be a ‘big topic’ with Xi

President Donald Trump has announced that artificial intelligence will take centre stage in a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday.

Trump wrote on Truth Social post, “A big day with ​President Xi of China. Super Intelligence (SI) ​will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it ​exactly where it is.”

Recently, President Trump renamed artificial intelligence as superintelligence at the UN General Assembly and downplayed all the AI fears emanating from the researcher’s warnings and tech industry executives’ calls to slow down AI development.

"That is China’s position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ!" Trump said, ​referring to ​the ⁠Department of Justice.

Despite industry warnings about the risks of AI misuse, Trump argued last week that the US doesn't need new rules, claiming that existing guardrails are already enough to regulate and prosecute AI firms.

Today, both leaders are set to a high-stakes summit discussing various topics spanning from trade, tariffs, and Taiwan to artificial intelligence. While heavily anchored in theatrical symbolism, the meeting aims to project a veneer of stable bilateral relations despite strategic rivalries over strategic resources. The core agenda features formal bilateral discussions followed by a lavish White House state dinner.

US corporate titans and tech executives, including Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Jensen Huang are slated to attend.
