Sebastian Stan is making his mom proud with his new film Fjord

The 44-year-old actor plays the father of a family that moves from Romania, his home country, to Norway in the movie Fjord, directed by acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu.

The story follows the family as things fall apart after they're accused of abusing their children. Throughout the film, Stan speaks Romanian and a bit of Norwegian.

Stan grew up in Romania before moving to Austria at age 8, and later to the United States. Speaking to People at the film's premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, he said the Romanian accent felt natural to him since he grew up hearing it from his mother. He compared it to being able to use a hand you didn't know you had all along.

Working with a mostly Romanian crew brought back a strong sense of familiarity, Stan said, describing the shared humor and way of thinking as something that had always been part of him, even if he hadn't fully experienced it in years.

Stan said his mother, Georgeta Orlovschi, is proud of him for the role, even though she hasn't seen the finished film yet. He joked that he's curious to hear her reaction once she does.

The film wasn't shot using typical Hollywood production methods. Director Mungiu explained that since the movie was made in Europe on a small budget, there were no trailers, managers, or publicists on set, and the whole cast and crew stayed together in the same hotel. Stan said he went into the project fully prepared for that difference and welcomed the experience.

Speaking at a Q&A following the film's screening, Stan also said he had no reservations going into the project and was completely open to the way it was made.
