Trump reviews US Falklands stance: What to know

Donald Trump has announced that the United States is reviewing its position on the Falkland Islands though he has not indicated whether the review will lead to any significant change in policy.

When asked about military expenditure as a follow-up question to his response on the Falklands, the US president said: “The UK has got some problems, but they’ll get solved.”

A statement from the spokesperson reads: “The islanders have repeatedly expressed their wish to remain a British overseas territory and our commitment to them is unwavering.”

Previously, the US administration has officially recognized the UK’s de facto administration of the islands but did not asserted sovereignty in this matter.

On Monday, Trump said while speaking to reporters that he was reviewing the US position on the Falkland Islands, stating, “I always review every position. That's just one of many.”

Trump responded: “I always review every position. That's just one of many.”

According to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, he will uphold an agreement made by his predecessor Sir Keir Starmer to devote 3.5% of UK gross domestic product to defense.

In addition, Chancellor John Healey told The Times on Tuesday that he would set out a clear path to meeting that Nato funding targets in the next fiscal assessment expected in the spring of next year.
