Grand Canyon faces more storms after deadly flash flood, 15 still missing
Around 15 people are still missing after flash flooding hit parts of Grand Canyon National Park
Grand Canyon is bracing for more rain and thunderstorms on Monday after a deadly flash flood that killed one person and left 15 missing.
During the flash flood, scores of visitors were also evacuated immediately. The flood also destroyed only the water pipeline used for residents and visitors, urging the residents to conserve water for emergency purposes.
In the midst of such devastation, the chances of further upcoming storms have not yet been minimized. The National Weather Service issued a statement on early Monday, “With deep monsoonal moisture in place and already saturated soils in some locations, an elevated risk of flash flooding will be in place through Monday.”
More than 60 people were airlifted from the canyon depths following Saturday's flooding, with additional evacuations assisted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety on Sunday.
"Grand Canyon National Park staff, in coordination with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, are continuing evacuation and response efforts and working to account for individuals who may have been in the affected area," the National Park Services said.
Torrents of water swept away footbridges and widened creek beds near the Colorado River. It severely impacted a major $208 million pipeline rehabilitation project intended to serve millions of visitors and residents.
According to National Weather Service meteorologist Justin Johndrow around half an inch to one inch of rain fell in roughly 30 minutes.
