Deadly Nepal-Tibet border flash flood: 291 foreign tourists among 384 missing

A devastating flash flood swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district near the Tibet border on Wednesday that killed at least 18 people and left hundreds of people including foreigners missing.

At least 384 tourists and travellers including 291 foreign nationals have been reported missing.

According to Nepal Tourism Board’s preliminary list, among the missing people more than 100 people were from India and 12 from the UK.

Chinese state media is also reporting "major casualties" in Tibet, which is controlled by China. The missing people also include eight South Korean nationals as they are currently not in touch following the flash flood as reported by the South Korean foreign ministry.

Those missing were involved in construction work related to the hydropower plant in the area and 10 others also reported stranded in the area while awaiting rescue.

At least 384 travellers, including 105 Indians, 93 Nepalis, three US citizens and 12 British nationals were missing ​from the region, Nepal's tourism authority said.

Nepal's army has successfully rescued 88 flood survivors, with military personnel currently working to reach another 115 stranded residents in the village of Mailung.

A devastating mudslide struck a border crossing in Tibet's Gyirong county, leaving several people missing and officials fearing major casualties.

The flash floods also swept away houses, roads, and power projects across neighboring Nepal.
