Hong Kong breaks 140-year temperature record as heatwave intensifies

In a latest update Hong Kong broke the highest temperature record spanning over 140 years after the region sweltered through its hottest day in history, recording a blistering 36.9°C at the Observatory headquarters.

While the Observatory serves as the city's key baseline, specific like Sheung Shui in the New Territories hit an astonishing 39.8°C.

As reported by China Daily, the extreme heat stemmed from subsiding air around Tropical Cyclone Dolphin, pushing temperatures to the hottest level since the 1980s.

The record temperature highlights the severity of the ongoing heat, with authorities urging residents to take precautions against prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

The latest heat spell surpassed the previous all-time high record of 36.6°C August 2017 during Typhoon Hato.

The extreme conditions have also renewed concerns over the impact of increasingly intense heat events in the region.

Forecasters also warned that the severe heatwave is expected to persist over the next couple of days before a shift in the weather brings potential relief in coming days.

Meteorological authorities are continuing to monitor temperatures as the hot and humid conditions persist across Hong Kong.
