Australian crew completes high-risk Antarctica rescue mission for US citizen

A US expeditioner has been rescued from Antarctica in a high-risk mid-winter medical evacuation carried out by an Australian aviation team in freezing temperatures and near-total darkness.

According to Skytraders, the Australian airline specialising in Antarctic flights, the mission began on July 28 after the Australian Antarctic Division received an "urgent request for assistance" to evacuate a patient from the US McMurdo research station.

An initial attempt was delayed by severe weather, but teh airline's Airbus A319 departed Australia on July 31 and landed at McMurdo more than five hours later in temperatures of -43 C.

The patient was transferred safely before the aircraft departed Antarctica "ahead of deteriorating conditions".

The flight landed in Christchurch, New Zealand, where the patient received medical treatment. Skytraders said the patient is now "recovering well".

Captain Al Wallach described the operation as particularly demanding.

"Every Antarctic mission demands absolute precision, but winter operations raise the complexity significantly," he said.

"The conditions we encountered were right on the edge of even the most specialized aircraft capability."

Co-pilot Louise Robertson told CNN that the crew prepared for several emergency scenarios, including the possibility of landing without runway lighting.

"It was a huge amount of concentration and workload," she said, adding that the success of the operation was a "team effort" involving close coordination between international aviation and weather teams.
