UK heat-related deaths near 2022 record as extreme temperatures persist

The UK Health Security Agency reported that the early-season toll is already nearing the all-time annual record of heat-associated deaths set during the historic summer of 2022 even before factoring in the peak summer month of August.

As reported by UKHSA on Thursday, an estimated 2,877 people in Britain have died from heat-related causes so far this year which is nearly double the total recorded during 2025 and approaching the record set in 2022.

This comes as a fourth heatwave this year is sweeping through Britain after a series of unusually hot spells pushed temperatures to record May and June highs in some parts of the country. 

The prolonged dry weather has also fueled wildfires.

The deaths occurred across two major episodes 753 in late May and 2,124 during an intense June heatwave that triggered a rare red heat-health alert.

According to the latest report, the preliminary figures for just these two months are already nearly double the total 1,504 heat-associated deaths recorded for the entire previous year 2025.

Researchers estimate that roughly 42% of these heat-linked fatalities were attributable to human-induced climate change, renewing urgent warnings from health officials and scientists about the growing strain on public health infrastructure and vulnerable populations.

Extreme heat has also fueled major wildfires in France, Spain and Greece that have killed firefighters, forced mass evacuations and disrupted businesses and travel.

France's national health agency said on Wednesday that there had been 5,764 excess deaths in the country between June 17 and July 2.

While Germany's RKI health body said on Thursday that an estimated 9,800 people had died so far this year from heat-related causes.
