Qatar condemns Houthi accusations against Saudi Arabia over the siege of Yemen

On Tuesday, Qatar vehemently denounced remarks by the Houthi military spokesman accusing Saudi Arabia of enforcing a siege on Yemen and choking off shipping channels.

According to a statement by Qatar's Foreign Ministry on the preservation treaties to uphold relevant UN Security Council resolutions comprising Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 concerning impeded navigation in the Red Sea.

In this connection, the ministry said that unrestricted transit in international waterways is a core principle of international law, along with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

On the contrary, Qatar also reiterated its unwavering support for Saudi Arabia and support for all necessary measures taken by the kingdom to protect its sovereignty. 

Recent statements come a day after the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen vowed a decisive countermeasure to threats by the Houthi group against commercial shipping.

Earlier, the Houthi group accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out an air attack on the Sanaa airport and launched missiles toward Saudi territory.

Nonetheless, Yemen’s internationally recognized government took responsibility for the airport strike, adding that it damaged the runway to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing.
