King Charles makes viral joke on ‘spicy food’
King Charles met with community leaders of Oxford and was interested in culture, especially food
King Charles joked about the "dangers" of spicy food while meeting with Oxford's community leaders on Friday.
The monarch was at the Schwarzman Centre, which is open for the community to use for groups, to unveil a plaque.
During the visit, the King spoke with representatives from the centre’s Cultural Programme and the Leys Festival, including Body Politic, a local dance and hip-hop group who will perform at the festival on Saturday, July 11.
The annual event is meant to celebrate the creativity and energy of the Blackbird Leys and Greater Leys communities.
Erica Whyman, creative lead for the Leys Festival, introduced colleagues from the festival to King Charles and explained what the festival is all about.
"He was particularly interested in the fact that it represents so many different cultures and different heritages in East Oxford," she said.
"He was asking everybody a little about that. He seemed very thrilled that there were so many different people,” Erica further mentioned.
She further mentioned, "And he was interested in the food culture, he was talking about spicy food and how it can be dangerous and how strong they are."
Around 3,000 people are expected to attend this weekend's festival at Blackbird Leys Park, with people from all over the world and 20 different nationalities attending.
Prominent Greater Leys community leader Dolcie Obhiozele said, "I spoke briefly to him about the Windrush generation and about the portrait that he commissioned of the Windrush generation which I think is now stored at Buckingham Palace."
Meanwhile, Luke Ejodamen, an active community volunteer and chef, said he was "over the moon" to be talking to the King, adding, "He asked me about the culture in Nigeria because he has been there before."
