King Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by Prince William and Prince Edward as they attended the annual Thistle Service at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Continuing one of Scotland's oldest and most prestigious royal traditions, members of the royal family were dressed in the Order's traditional ceremonial robes and insignia as they participated in the service inside the historic cathedral.

The official Instagram handle of the British royal family posted a carousel of photos from the ceremony on Wednesday.

The details in the caption read: "The King and Queen, joined by The Duke of Rothesay and The Duke of Edinburgh, have attended the Thistle Service at St Giles’ Cathedral."

"The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is the greatest order of chivalry in Scotland, recognising sixteen Knights and Ladies with the highest honour in the country."

"The King is Sovereign of the Order and appointments are made in recognition of men and women who have contributed significantly to national life," it concluded.
