Calgary under air quality alert as wildfire smoke blankets Alberta
Environment Canada warned that exposure to the smoke may cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and a mild cough
Environment Canada has issued an air quality warning for Calgary as wildfire smoke drifting from northern Saskatchewan continues to affect parts of Alberta.
According to Environment Canada, the warning was issued at around 2:30 PM on Monday after smoke from ongoing wildfires moved into the province.
The agency said the smoky conditions are expected to remain for the next few days, leading to poor air quality and reduced visibility.
The weather agency warned that exposure to the smoke may cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and a mild cough and more serious symptoms can include wheezing, chest pain and a severe cough.
Environment Canada said older adults, pregnant people, infants, young children and those with existing medical conditions or chronic illnesses are more likely to experience health effects from the smoke.
The agency advised residents to reduce their exposure where possible and said: "When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible."
Wildfire smoke has affected several parts of western Canada in recent weeks as fires continue to burn across northern Saskatchewan and neighbouring regions.
Officials are encouraging residents to monitor local air quality updates and limit outdoor activities if they experience symptoms or if air quality deteriorates further.
Those with severe or persistent symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.
The air quality warning will remain in place while smoky conditions continue across the region.
