Severe tornadoes strike Illinois and Iowa as violent Midwest storms sweep region: What residents need to know

According to the National Weather Service, confirmed tornadoes were reported in Illinois and Iowa Wednesday night as severe weather swept across a broad region of the Midwest.

The reports indicate that a tornado was reported near the small northwest Iowa community of Harpers Ferry at 5:10 p.m. However, a second confirmed tornado also passed through Charleston in central Illinois at about 6:40 p.m. local time.

Concerning the situation, the weather service confirmed that both alerts were flagged as a dangerous situation while indicating environments where intense tornadoes are possible.

According to CBS News, extensive damage in Charleston includes downed trees and power lines.

Charleston police said: “There are a large number of trees blocking roadways throughout Charleston at this time.”

A coordinator for the Effingham Emergency Management Agency, Larry Thies said that initial resorts indicated severe damage to buildings, trailers, and downed power lines.

Officials were efficiently working to set up emergency operations; they faced significant challenges because the internet was down in the area.

At present, the status of potential victims is unknown, and no injuries are reported. On Wednesday, meteorologist Rob Marciano reported that more than 120 million Americans were facing severe weather advisories, including the Gulf Coast states, which were under flood alerts due to Tropical Storm Arthur.

“This is unique for June, this is unusual to have such a strong jet stream just screaming across the country, then you’ve got the summertime tropical moisture coming in.,” Marciano said.

It is crucial to note that winds come at both different and distinct levels. Additionally, an atmospheric comparison indicates a high probability of not just tornadoes, but intense tornadoes of EF2 strength or greater on the ground.
