Backrooms director Kane Parsons didn't hold himself back on the artificial intelligence debate and questioned AI's place in the entertainment industry.

The 20-year-old filmmaker recently sat down with The Australian after the success of his new horror film and articulated his thoughts on the usage of AI in creative works.

Kane shared that he was “in the same boat as most well-adjusted people" who feared that technology might take over the industry.

The YouTuber admitted that if it were in his hands to "make generative AI disappear forever, I probably would.”

“Creatively, I get no enjoyment from using those tools. It defeats the purpose entirely for me," he insisted.

On whether AI can take over VFX related tasks, Kane shared that he believes it might become less laborious in the future but added that “right now it’s difficult to discuss objectively because there’s so much at stake and so many genuinely harmful consequences already happening.”

Keeping his stance on AI, Kane said it is not an isolated problem but rather a visible consequence of a society's deeply declining values and broken financial systems.

“What interests me more is interrogating it artistically,” Parsons said. “We already live in a world where you walk outside and there are billboards and signs that are obvious AI slop. That’s become part of our visual reality. To me, generative AI feels less like innovation than a symptom of a broader cultural and economic rot.”

He added, “I’m interested in using that iconography in art – not using AI to make the art itself, but examining what it represents. I definitely want to explore it further in future projects.”

Kane's has become the youngest director with a number one box-office hit with Backrooms which grossed over $118 million on the box office with a small budget of $10 million only.
