Marvel boss believes Hollywood is changing forever: Here’s why
Young filmmakers' movies Obsession and Backrooms performance stunned Hollywood observers
Hollywood is undergoing a shift in how audiences consume movies. Those at the forefront of changing viewing habits are Gen Z.
Now, the Marvel creators, the Russo brothers, are weighing in on this new generation of audiences.
A prime example of this change is the new breakout hits Obsession and Backrooms.
These low-budget movies have shocked observers in the industry, as they have beaten the box office of films from mega studios that are currently screening.
At SXSW, Anthony Russo said, “If you just follow your own ethos, I’m fascinated by Obsession."
"[It’s] viciously funny, right? In a very dark way, made for less than a million dollars, and will be the highest return ever for a movie."
In a stark admission, Russo said, “That’s an explosively disruptive moment."
"[The state of the film business] is in a very, very complicated place."
However, the director said the disruption is not exactly bad news.
Pointing to young filmmakers such as Curry Barker and Kane Parsons, Russo said that Gen Z are excited about buying tickets and are involved in storytelling.
"But I think that’s a good thing. I think it’s a good thing, because Gen Z are aging into becoming not only the dominant audience, but the dominant storytellers today," he concluded.
