Former Newcastle United player Kevin Keegan diagnosed with stage 4 cancer
Kevin Keegan, former Newcastle United player and manager, breaks silence on his stage 4 cancer diagnosis
Former English soccer player Kevin Keegan, who managed Newcastle United throughout the 1990s and played for from 1982 to 1984, has been diagnosed with stage four cancer.
On January 7, 2026, Newcastle United and his family announced his cancer diagnosis and other important information related to his disease, as he was admitted to the hospital “for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms.”
"These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment. Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this difficult time, the family are requesting privacy, and will be making no further comment,” his family’s statement read.
According to the BBC, Keegan also opened up about his diseases in one of his onstage appearances over the weekend at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, revealing that the disease has spread to other parts of his body.
He said, "I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation. Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer. They said they had an absolute top doctor for fighting what you have got, which is stage four cancer."
Alluding to Liverpool FC’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Keegan, who also managed multiple U.K. teams between 1992 and 2008, added that the doctor was a "Liverpool supporter, so I knew I wouldn't walk alone.”
The doctor even updated him about a “new treatment” that has “got a tremendous strike rate.”
"I said, 'What's your strike rate?' He said, '33%'. I thought it would be 80%, 90%. 33%! I'm still here at the moment," Keegan recalled.
It is pertinent to mention that Kevin Keegan has been receiving support from all across the globe since his diagnosis came to light.
