Dramatic rescue as hero dog battles rough waves for 30 minutes at sea
The head of the rescue expresses his astonishment over the way the dog was saved
Dogs are known for swimming. However, in the case of the brown-and-white pooch, his skills in the sea saved his life.
The incident happened on the NSW south coast.
An emergency call was made describing a dog that has been swept off rocks by the rough current of the sea.
"We received two phone calls, one from a member of the public at Observation Point and the other from national parks," Marine Rescue NSW Inspector Glenn Sullivan told ABC.
Instantly, a dramatic rescue was kicked off.
Volunteers from Marine Rescue NSW began looking for signs of the canine in the sea.
However, in a miraculous way, the dog heroically battled the rough sea for up to 30 minutes.
"They said that there was a dog that had been washed off into the water and was swimming out into the middle of the water, about 200 to 300 meters offshore."
And with this, he swam nearly a kilometer off to the coast to Snapper Island.
Upon discovery, Sullivan raved about the dog's stamina.
"It would have been a fair swim out there," he added.
"[The dog] was swimming around for 20 minutes to half an hour before it made it to shore."
"That would have taken a fair degree of stamina to be able to undertake that type of a swim," Sullivan said.
Rescue was not over
However, the rescue did not end there.
A dog, who had swum in the sea for half an hour, was not in an usual state.
He was frightened.
So, it took the volunteers ashore over an hour to chase and bring the canine to safety.
"We got it back to shore, and it's now nice and safe," Inspector Sullivan shared.
Now, the dog has been handed over to Eurobodalla Shire Council rangers.
Following the dramatic rescue, Inspector Sullivan said, "I've personally never rescued an animal in this fashion before."
