Elon Musk reacts after ChatGPT says Charlie Kirk ‘wasn’t assassinated’
The screenshot on Charlie Kirk quickly gained attention on X, where Elon Musk also weighed in on the incident
A social media post highlighting an apparent factual error by ChatGPT has reignited debate over how AI systems handle major news events. Tech commentator Katie Miller shared a screenshot showing the chatbot incorrectly stating that conservative activist Charlie Kirk was still alive, despite his widely reported assassination in September 2025.
The screenshot quickly gained attention on X, where Elon Musk also weighed in on the incident.
According to the screenshot that Miller shared, it looks like a user asked ChatGPT Voice a direct question, like “Was Charlie Kirk assassinated?"
Then the chatbot said that Kirk “has not been assassinated” and that he was still alive. A lot of people seemed thrown off because Kirk’s death actually got a tonne of media coverage after the shooting, which happened during a public appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Miller attached the image, and the caption read something along the lines of, “ChatGPT says Charlie Kirk wasn’t assassinated."
Musk then replied with a raised-eyebrow emoji, basically showing a weird kind of doubt about how the bot could miss what many saw as a major political event from months earlier.
The whole back and forth started getting attention from users, especially those talking about how hard it is for AI systems to stay updated. It also pushed some wider discussions on how dependable AI-generated answers are when people ask for real facts, particularly about current happenings.
Who was Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk was a conservative political activist, mostly known for co-founding Turning Point USA in 2012 when he was just 18. The organisation was basically built around pushing conservative thinking among high school and college students across the United States, not just a small crowd.
Over time, Kirk kind of became one of the most recognisable names in conservative youth politics, and he would pop up at political events a lot; plus, he joined media discussions frequently.
Kirk was shot and killed by a sniper on September 10, 2025, while he was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. The news of his death, sort of, sent reactions across the political spectrum pretty fast.
