King Charles assigns major role to Prince Edward, Duchess Sophie amid Meghan Markle's efforts
Meghan Markle visited Geneva where she said, "Children must be safe by design, not safe by chance"
King Charles has assigned his brother Prince Edward and his wife Duchess Sophie a new major role after Meghan Markle’s visit to Geneva.
According to a palace announcement, Prince Edward and Sophie have been assigned to visit Portugal from 1-3 June.
The Majesty Magazine shared the palace announcement on X, formerly Twitter handle.
It tweeted, “NEW: The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will visit Portugal from 1-3 June to celebrate the historical ties and modern relationship between the UK and Portugal.”
The visit will mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor that underpins the world’s oldest diplomatic alliance.
The fresh announcement comes days after Meghan, this week in Geneva, installed the Lost Screen Memorial at the Place des Nations alongside the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79), bringing the urgent realities of online harm into one of the world’s most consequential spaces for global public health and policymaking.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, personally introduced both the Duchess and Amy Neville, a member of The Parents’ Network, at the ceremony, underscoring the WHO’s commitment to elevating the issue of online safety within the global health agenda.
At the opening, Meghan spoke about the importance of transforming awareness into accountability and collective action.
Reflecting on conversations she has had with families across the world, she emphasized that online harm transcends borders, demographics, incomes, and ideologies, and socioeconomic divides, reminding attendees that every community has been touched in some way by the consequences of unsafe digital environments.
“Children must be safe by design, not safe by chance,” she said during the ceremony.
