AWS cooling recovery slows in North Virginia data centre; Coinbase among services impacted
Temperature increases within a single data center led to a power loss, impacting some hardware and the services reliant on the facility
Amazon’s cloud unit reportedly confirmed Thursday that it had made incremental progress in restoring cooling at the North Virginia data centre after overheating disrupted some services, though the process is moving slower than anticipated.
A power loss linked to the incident has affected hardware, and services reliant on the facility could experience impairments.
Amazon Web Services is actively working to restore temperatures to normal levels. While it has made continuous improvement, the recovery of the cooling system is moving slower than initially anticipated.
In line with its recovery efforts, the cloud computing platform clarified that it has redirected traffic away from the impacted Availability Zone for most servies. An “Availability Zone” incorporates one or more connected physical data centres and is designed to operate independently within an AWS region.
According to Reuters, the recent outage has affected Coinbase, which, according to some users, may experience suboptimal performance due to the AWS issues, though the company assured customers that their funds remain safe.
AWS has not yet released a detailed explanation for the cooling system failure or the specific trigger for the overheating. The AWS North Virginia region launched in 2006 and has six AZs available for businesses.
This region is unfortunately prone to experiencing problems; in addition, an outage in the US-EAST-1 region often causes disruptions globally.
