US President Donald Trump joked about how his late mother, who was born in Scotland, "had a crush on" King Charles as he welcomed the British monarch.

Speaking after a pomp-filled welcome on the South Lawn featuring a 21-gun salute, Trump said of his mother, "She really did love the family, but I also remember her saying, very clearly, 'Charles, look — young Charles, he is so cute.' My mother had a crush on Charles, can you believe it? Amazing... I wonder what she is thinking right now."

King Charles was seen laughing and even raising his hand in acknowledgment as the US President shared his mother's feelings towards him and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Commenting on the president's speech, AFP new agency wrote, "Trump's tone was a world away from his recent jibes at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer."

"In the centuries since we won our independence, Americans have had no closer friends than the British," said Trump, referring to the fact that the royal visit marks the 250th anniversary of the US colonies declaring their freedom from British rule.
